u3a members tend to be highly engaged with political and societal developments around the world, so it’s no surprise that this Current Affairs group has been active for nearly two decades. Demand for thoughtful discussion has been so strong that a long-standing waiting list recently led to the creation of a second group, now open for new members to join.
Current Affairs 1 is led by Nadine H., who took over from another member in 2014. She describes her role primarily as that of an administrator. The group meets monthly on Mondays at Morningside Library for a couple of hours, creating a consistent space for meaningful debate.
The group thrives on open and respectful discussion. In CA1, leadership of each discussion meeting rotates among members, who select and research a topic of their choice using a variety of sources, then chair the meeting themselves. This approach ensures a wide-ranging and stimulating mix of subjects - from Scottish independence and assisted dying to forestry, environmental policy, and the recent tram group enquiry report - allowing people to learn from each other’s perspectives.
Nadine brings a strong background in healthcare to the group. Formerly a GP in Edinburgh with a focus on student health, she later joined the Scottish Government as a medical advisor in Primary Care. Her work there centred on GP and community-based services, their organisation and contribution to population and individual health. She was also directly involved in changes such as the abolition of prescription charges in Scotland. With her analytical mindset and insights into the workings of government, Nadine is particularly well-suited to guiding group discussions.
Her advice for potential group leaders?
“Be organised, keep an eye out for interesting developments, and make good use of lists!”
She also encourages fostering collaboration within the group so that discussion leaders can participate as equals. And when it comes to structure, she recommends finding a format that works - and sticking with it. Support is always available from her deputy, other group leaders and the Committee.
