Group Leader Profile: Paul B. - Film Appreciation

Many long standing u3a members have led multiple groups, often starting soon after joining. Paul B., for example, joined Edinburgh u3a in 2006 and was encouraged to start a group at his very first Welcome Meeting - an informal get-together held regularly for new members.

Paul’s first group was Ancient History, which became one of the many subject-based member-led groups. Like many members, Paul has a background in education, having worked as a teacher of Classics, Latin and Computing until his retirement in 2005. He also led the golf section for seven years.

With a passion for films and TV series, it was a natural next step for Paul to start a Film Appreciation Group - one of five in Edinburgh u3a. He launched the group when others were full, drawing on his impressive personal collection. Paul enjoys sharing hidden gems and fostering discussion, both within his group and across others.

With his extensive experience as a group leader, Paul believes the role is simple with a bit of organisation. He primarily uses email to communicate with members, share ideas, and reflect on discussions. Collaboration is key, and members bring an attitude of enjoyment that makes leading a group rewarding.

Paul sets up his meetings in Morningside Library, when the group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 2.30 pm. They discuss a film or TV series already watched - selected through research using IMDb, other online resources, and suggestions from group members - before discussing it as a group, typically with between ten and fifteen attendees.

For anyone considering starting a group, Paul’s advice is straightforward: set clear expectations from the start and be responsive to potential members. He also praises the Group Coordinators for their invaluable support in helping new groups get up and running.
