Film and TV lovers have found a happy place in Edinburgh u3a, where five enthusiastic groups gather regularly to explore everything from Hollywood blockbusters to international cinema.
One such group is led by Andrew F., who brings both energy and organisation to the mix. The group, Film Appreciation 4, meets on the second Wednesday of the month at the Caley Picture House on Lothian Road.
Prior to retiring, Andrew worked as the Additional Support for Learning Manager for Falkirk Council. He became an Edinburgh u3a member in 2017 and first joined the film appreciation group, which he now leads, six years ago. His focus is on making sure everyone participates and has an opportunity to share their experiences of the films and series they have watched.
Originally meeting at the Filmhouse, the group adapted during the pandemic and shifted toward general release films and TV series. Today they include both, occasionally enjoying group outings to the cinema when something appeals, recent highlights being Oppenheimer and Conclave.
Each month, members meet for coffee, share their thoughts about what they have seen, and recommend future viewing. With 8-14 attendees, discussion is lively, so Andrew ensures everyone has a chance to speak. That structure helps keep discussions thoughtful and inclusive - and everyone comes prepared.
The group is open to new members who share a love for screen storytelling. Andrew is also active in a badminton group and has a word of advice for anyone thinking of starting their own u3a group: be clear about finances and avoid putting all the responsibility on one person - teamwork really matters!
