Anne B. discovered her love of theatre while living in London, where she frequently attended Shakespeare and opera performances. With additional reading, she built her knowledge of both, while also exploring poetry, Buddhism and art.
Originally from Edinburgh, Anne lived in London for fifty years. She worked as a secretary before retraining as a solicitor in family law in her 30s - a move she calls “the best thing I ever did.” After retiring, she returned to Edinburgh in 2015 to be closer to family and friends and promptly joined the local u3a.
Today, Anne leads two popular monthly groups: Shakespeare and Opera 2. Though not a formal expert, Anne draws from a wealth of experience and ‘informal expertise’ from attending performances at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
The Shakespeare group meets at Stockbridge Library to read, watch and discuss plays in-depth over several weeks. Currently, they are working on Much Ado About Nothing but have in the past covered Othello and The Tempest. Opera 2 gathers in Anne’s home to enjoy full opera viewings - with breaks for tea and discussion. Her thoughtful preparation, paired with group members’ informed contributions and an excellent deputy handling logistics, makes for a rich, collaborative experience. A third opera group has recently started to meet growing interest.
Her advice to potential group leaders? You don’t need expertise, just enthusiasm. “You’ll find people willing to sit around, have a nice chat, and explore new things together,” she says.
